定语从句

定语从句是修饰名词或代词的从句，放在被修饰的词后面。它是语法题里最爱考的从句之一，难点在于「关系词怎么选」：到底用 who、which、that，还是 whose、where、when？

学完这一节，你应该能说出先行词和关系词的概念，会用「看先行词、看成分」的方法选关系词，并能分清 that 与 which、限制性与非限制性定语从句。

先行词和关系词

被定语从句修饰的名词或代词叫先行词，引导定语从句的词叫关系词。

The man who is standing there is my teacher.
站在那里的那个人是我的老师。

这个句子中，the man 是先行词，who 是关系词，who is standing there 是定语从句。关系词有两个作用：连接主句和从句，同时在从句里充当一个成分（主语、宾语、定语或状语）。

选关系词看两点：先行词是人还是物；关系词在从句里作什么成分。

关系代词的用法

关系代词	先行词	在从句中作	例句
who	人	主语	The girl who sings well is my sister.
whom	人	宾语	The man whom I met is a doctor.
which	物	主语或宾语	The book which is on the desk is mine.
that	人或物	主语或宾语	The book that I bought is interesting.
whose	人或物	定语（……的）	The boy whose father is a teacher is my friend.

关系代词在从句里作宾语时可以省略：The book (that) I bought is interesting. 作主语时不能省略。

whose 表示「……的」，后面要接名词：the boy whose father is a teacher 里，whose father 合在一起作从句的主语。

关系副词

关系副词 when、where、why 在从句里作状语，从句本身的成分是完整的。

关系副词	先行词	相当于	例句
when	表示时间的词	介词 + which	I remember the day when we first met.
where	表示地点的词	介词 + which	This is the house where he lives.
why	reason	for which	That is the reason why he was late.

怎么判断用关系代词还是关系副词？看从句缺不缺成分：

• This is the house which he bought. bought 缺少宾语，所以用关系代词 which。
• This is the house where he lives. lives 的意思已经完整，只缺地点状语，所以用 where。

介词加关系代词

关系代词前面可以有介词，这时只能用 which（指物）或 whom（指人），不能用 that 和 who：

the house in which he lives
the man to whom I spoke

这两种说法也可以把介词放到从句的末尾，关系代词可以用 that 或省略：the house (that) he lives in，the man (whom) I spoke to。

that 和 which 的选择

多数情况下 that 和 which 可以互换，但有些情况只能用其中一个：

只能用 that	只能用 which
先行词是 all、everything、nothing、something、little 等不定代词	前面有介词时
先行词被最高级、序数词、the only、the very 修饰	非限制性定语从句（前面有逗号）
先行词既有人又有物
